Master Paddler

Master Paddler five bead necklace.

This is the title recieved by a competitor of the Juvenile Category paddling in an all-male or all-female cayuco, who has won each of the five stretches of the Ocean to Ocean Cayuco Race across the Panama Canal.

In previous years, for each stretch won, the competitors are rewarded with a bead of different color, and if one paddler collects all five beads (either in one season or in several seasons -see bead collector), additionally to receiving the Master Paddler Title, the competitor also has the right to listen to a "secret" that only Master Paddlers know. However, in 2007 CREBA has announced that the Master Paddler title will only be granted to the padlers of a team that wins all five stretches in a single season, eliminating thus the possibility of the beads collection throughout several seasons and restoring the original Master Paddler tradition.

Originally, the secret was passed to the winner of the title by one of the members of The Shriners, the Society that used to organize the race in cooperation with the American Explorer Scouts and that created the Master Paddler tradition. Now under CREBA Administration, the secret is passed on from a former Master Paddler.
